Surrounded by Holy Narmada River, Mandla is said to be the field of Mandan Mishra and therefore it has been designated as "Mahishmati Nagri". Mandla town has many old temples and internationally famous Kanha National Park, which is about 80 km. away from district proper. Also there is a fossils garden known as "Ghughwa Fossil Park" which is about 85 km away. A beautiful monument of Gondwana kingdom "Palace of Ram Nagar" is still spreading the glory of Gondwana Kingdom. Ram Nagar is only 30 km. away from Mandla. |
Tribal population dominates the district. Main sub castes of tribals are Baiga, Gond, Kol & Pradhan. Majority of them is depending on forest for their livelihood. |
Mandla is further blessed with Narmada & her tributaries like Banjer, Thanwar, Kharmer, Surpen, Matiyari, Balai, Hallow, Chayrar, Makrar rivers. Mekal & Satpura hills where Teak, Sal, Bija and other fuel and timber woods are found in abundance. In Mandla, dolomite, Bauxite, limestone etc. is found in large quantity and of good quality. Difficult terrain has made it difficult to provide facilities for education of the students in many remote places. |

Socially less developed, weak economy, conservative attitude, blind faiths, unhygienic habits of smoking, alcoholism, careless attitude towards health and lack of education especially for girls are the main reasons which have resulted in the poor literacy, status and educational backwardness of the district. |
